Tradition and translation in Latinamerican Modernism. We will show how translation becomes a permanent mechanism that goes through the main concerns of the Spanish American modernist writers, thus being a key resource for carrying out the project to modernize the language and literature of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. We will study the translations of some fragments of the epic texts from the Greek classical tradition that Leopoldo Lugones publishes in the early 20th century, a strategy that will allow him not only to establish the Martin Fierro as the national epic poem, but also to consolidate his paradigmatic place within the Argentinian cultural field. Through his appreciation of Greek culture and his acclimatization of the modern Athens in the Río de la Plata area, Lugones will strengthen his confidence in the aristocracy of intelligence introduced by a recent reestructuring in the social field, a consequence of inmigration and accelerated urbanization, in order to devise the basic grounding of his nationalist cultural project.

The first bilingual collections of Greek and Latin classics in Europe and the first in Catalonia: the Fundació Bernat Metge collection The translation of Greek and Latin classics into several European languages for publication in bilingual collections occurred simultaneously in the period between the two world wars. This was not by chance: at the end of the nineteenth century a new era had begun in Germany in terms of classical philology and textual criticism. Moreover, translations began to be valued in the literary systems of the respective target languages. At the end of World War I, the Loeb Classical Library in England, the collection of the Association Budé in France, and the collection of the Bernat Metge Foundation in Catalonia had common origins. Some of their goals share many similarities, but there are also differences between them. This article analyzes the origin of each collection and examines in detail the Catalan case: the collection of the Bernat Metge Foundation formed part of a classicist movement that swept across Europe in the first two decades of the twentieth century, but which did not include the rest of Spain.

ENCRUCIJADAS DE LOS MODERNISMOS ANGLOSAJÓN E HISPANOAMERICANO SOBRE TRADUCCIÓN Y TRADICIÓN EN LA POESÍA DE W. B. YEATS
Daniel AGUIRRE OTEIZA

Crossroads in Anglo-Saxon and Hispano-American Modernism: Translation and Tradition in the Poetry of W. B. Yeats These notes briefly consider the poetics of W. B. Yeats with a view to offering a general reflection on one of the paradoxes defining translation: the need to reproduce an original text. According to Yeats, poetry lives only to the extent that it succeeds in bringing into the present the language of a community that has been forged by generations of poets and traditional bards. A translation that is faithful to this theory of poetry confronts the paradox of having to represent absent voices in such a way that they chime with the present. This paradox is crucial to modern literature in Europe and, particularly, in Latin America, where according to Octavio Paz, “geographical and historical distance, exoticism and archaism, coupled with the present day, fuse together in an instantaneous present.” The cultural translation of the supposedly intrinsic and the supposedly “other”, which defines the poetic tradition of Latin America begun by Rubén Darío, therefore constitutes an appropriate starting point from which to discuss the translation of W. B. Yeats’s poetry into Spanish.

LOS OJOS DE OLIMPIA. DIEZ VERSIONES DE UNA ESCENA DE TERROR
Isabel GARCÍA ADÁNEZ

Olimpia's Eyes: Ten Versions of a Horror Scene E. T. A. Hoffmann wrote some of the most terrifying scenes in German literature, and one of them is to be found in "The sandman" ("Der Sandmann"), published in 1816, analysed by Sigmund Freud as a paradigm of the sinister. There are numerous editions of this story and all manner of versions in Spanish: some old and some very recent; some intended for specialists and others for children; some quite brilliant and others which have been dumbed down and are full of errors. Nine of these versions, published between 1962 and 2009, are analysed in the present study with a view to identifying how the characteristics of the edition or the desire to tone down the content influence the translation.

KEYWORDS: German literature, E.T.A. Hoffmann, horror fiction, children’s fiction, reception.

CLASSIC CHANDLER TRANSLATIONS PUBLISHED BY BARRAL EDITORES (BARCELONA)

Daniel LINDER

After nearly twenty years of pioneering editorial work at Seix Barral, poet and editor Carlos Barral left the company and founded his own, Barral Editores, in 1970. Barral quickly established his own catalogue, which included new collections and new translations. These works were distributed widely via the collection Ediciones de bolsillo, created under Distribuciones de Enlace, a joint venture of Barral and other Spanish publishing houses. By 1978, when Barral Editores ceased publishing, Carlos Barral had made his mark: many of the translations he commissioned were used widely for many years and several were considered “classic” versions. This is the case of the four Marlowe novels (The Big Sleep; Farewell, My Lovely; The Little Sister and The Long Goodbye) published in the Serie negra policial in 1972 and 1973. Josep Elías’s translation of Farewell, My Lovely is a unique example of intensification of slang at a time when the harsh, autocratic Franco regime was slowly loosening its censorial grip. However, the other three translations are much less remarkable: two are plagiarisms and one is an indirect translation from a French target text. I will describe and explain the sociocultural context in which these translations took place in 1972-73, and also the context in which later editions became massively popular during the noir novel publishing boom in post-Franco democratic Spain.
